Description
Module: Reconciling the Role of Teacher and Service Provider

Units: Unit 1: Private Sector Education; 2: Impact and Accountability; Unit 3: Being a Teacher, Service Provider, and Yourself

Module outline: Reconciling the Role of Teacher and Service Provider is a module that addresses the main players in the teaching and learning process. We all experienced some form of formal or informal education, and we recognise the systems that we have been in. After taking a look at contemporary and traditional teaching styles, we will delve into the how of teaching. We start at the basic teaching cycle and then focus on the various participants and how to make each interaction between them work.

Why look at your role as teacher and service provider separately?
What does TEFL teaching in another country mean? Will I be working in a school that is modelled and looks like my own? It is hard to understand what teaching looks like if you have only been a student, but we all have the capacity. Therefore, learning to balance your personal growth as an educator, the requirements your school or teaching centre will place on you and the need of your students is paramount.

By the end of this module, you will know:
• that Continuing Professional Development is necessary for developing as an educator.
• what it means to collaborate, as a teacher, with peers and establish professional learning networks.
• that professional competence includes accountability towards multiple stakeholders in the community that you serve.

By the end of this module, you will understand:
• the layout and landscape of the private and TEFL education industry.
• your role in impacting the lives of your students and also understanding the accountability that you are under.
• that all teachers need to acquire the mindset of being lifelong learners.
• that teachers should develop a critical self-awareness to improve.
• that teachers need feedback in order to improve.
• that a teacher’s ethical competence is linked to their professional competence.

By the end of this module, you will be able to:
• Anticipate and manage the conflicts between your role as teacher and service provider.
• Separate your role as educator and service provider.
• Set up networking and professional growth tools and practices to enhance your development as a teacher.
• Engage in collaboration with other teachers to grow mutually.
• Apply yourself ethically and professionally in your role as an educator and service provider.
