Module 5: Lesson Planning (TEFL006)

Description
Module: Lesson Planning

Units: 1 Begin with the end in mind; 2 Lesson Flow; 3: Being Practical

Module outline: Failing to plan is planning to fail, and the three steps into the classroom (also known as the three-step plan) isn't going to cut it. Through this module, we aim to introduce the principles behind lesson planning and enable you to create effective lesson plans without relying on someone else’s templates or lesson designs.

Why plan lessons?
The reliance on copy-pasting templates and completing parts of someone else's plan is eschewed for a more principled approach. What are we doing when we plan a lesson and how do we ensure that our lessons can be creative, unique and instructionally sound? We begin with the end in mind and practice good lesson flow principles before incorporating the practical.

By the end of this module, you will know:
• the principles behind planning an effective lesson.
• the principles of establishing clear learning objectives for your lessons.
• the process and flow of a lesson.

By the end of this module, you will understand:
• the theoretical basis for lesson planning.
• the practical basis for lesson planning.
• that lesson planning is not only for new educators, but forms the foundation of a successful teacher.
• the impact that the online environment can have on your lesson planning.

By the end of this module, you will be able to:
• Design a lesson plan that clearly outlines your aims/goals for the lesson, what the expected learner outcomes are and how you will go about achieving this.
• Have an insight to the varying approaches you can use to achieve your aims
• Practical aspects of lesson planning
• Identify learner needs and interests.
• Develop lesson plans to incorporate achievable and assessable goals that provide the opportunity for feedback.
• Show your ability to plan learning designed for your learners’ needs.
• Plan learning experiences including learning outcomes, assessments, and feedback.
• Plan practice activities and assessments that develop the authentic use of language for differentiated purposes.
