Description
Module: Teaching Methodology

Module breakdown:
Unit 1: Introducing Concepts
Unit 2: Practice and Feedback
Unit 3: Evaluation
Unit 4: The Communicative Approach
Unit 5: Teaching Tools
Unit 6: Online Teaching

Module outline: Teaching Methodology is a module that dives deeper into each of the various parts of the teaching and learning process. Effectively introducing concepts and grabbing your learners’ attention with a “hook” is just as important as keeping and living up to that attention when students engage and practice, and you provide them with feedback. We then move on to assessments, for learning and for measuring, because both will be required in most teaching environments. The communicative approach is then addressed as it is central to the way that we put all the pieces of a lesson together in a language classroom. But we also provide you with some solid tools to use to successfully do all of the above.

Why is teaching methodology important?

Preparing for a lesson is a new experience for most, so what should you plan for? How are you going to go about teaching each concept? We answer the question of WHAT to plan during your lessons. Learn how to do this with the eye on teaching a foreign language and get equipped with all the tools necessary to do this effectively in a class and online.

By the end of this module, you will know:
• The different learning theories that impact language acquisition
• How factors like age, speaking multiple languages, and thinking style affect learning languages.
• How Neuroscientific research has revealed factors that influence learning a language.
• Why we test students.
• Various kinds of assessments.
• How to evaluate assessment results and decide what to do.
• How to design and implement formative assessments, summative assessments, performance-based assessments and criteria-based assessments.

By the end of this module, you will understand:
• That research can help us comprehend how people learn languages.
• The different learning theories around language acquisition.
• How to teach in a way that lets students practice and get better.
• How teachers can use various activities and strategies to help students learn.
• Why different assessments are used for different reasons.
• How assessments impact future decisions and planning.
• Why assessments need to be authentic and fair.
• How assessments help students critically self-reflect.

By the end of this module, you will be able to:
• Introduce new concepts using various methods and media.
• Actively engage students in learning activities and assessments.
• Provide meaningful feedback to students to help them learn.
• Understand how language theories affect teaching.
• Use different language theories to implement effective language activities.
• Provide students with concepts, real-life practice and feedback on their language use.
• Make lessons that include modelling, but also allow students to practice on their own.
• Implement various teaching activities and strategies.
• Check if students understand the concepts you are teaching.
• Understand different types of assessments and how to use the results for future planning.
