Module outline: Grammar. The devil is in the details, the saying goes, and the importance of teaching students the structure through which they will understand and seek to be understood is important. Grammar and the principles and challenges that accompany it are laid bare. The principles of Phonemes, Phonological Awareness and Phonics are addressed as these can be seen as the verbal equivalent of grammar before we dive into deep sections on general and specific grammar that you will need to engage on with your students. We round off the module by providing guidance on designing grammar activities, specifically to make them practical.

Why teach and assessing grammar?

Dangling participles, double negatives, split infinitives, and concord? What are these things. They may not matter to everyone all the time, especially with the onset of short-hand digital communication and auto-correct, but grammar matters. It is the glue that keeps sentences and words functional, and you are in the position of ensuring that your students put their phrases and sentences together in a cohesive and understandable manner. Follow this course to not only understand what to teach, but how to do so effectively.
